Misogynoir Transformed

A study guide of Moya Bailey’s 2021 book ‘Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women's Digital Resistance.’

Praxis

Bailey provides many practical ways to address common problems that may arise with misogynoir. This section will give you some questions to reflect upon alone or discuss with others to help you put these ideas into practice.

  1. On introspection and being honest with yourself, have you supported, watched, or engaged with content that was upholding misogynoir, such as films, movies, or social media content?

  2. What are some organizations in your community taking direct action to challenge misogynoir? Are you able to support them through volunteering or donations?

  3. Challenge yourself to seek out films and media that are made and feature Black women. This will help challenge stereotypes you may have ingrained about what Black women should look like, act like and be like in films. Some of the ones mentioned specifically in the book are Living Single (1993), Daughters of the Dust (1991), Eve’s Bayou (1997), and The Watermelon Woman (1996).

  4. How has the digital space been a form of support for you or the group you identify with? How has it been a negative space for you?

  5. Have you ever seen digital alchemy in action (whether addressing misogynoir or another form of discrimination)? How did it play out?

  6. Have you ever called someone ‘out’ on an online platform? Have you ever called someone ‘in?’ How were these experiences perceived by the other parties involved? Were they receptive to the correction?

  7. How can we, as a community, support Black trans women's health?
